Ethnobotanical Study of Medicinal Plants used by Traditional Health Practitioners to Manage Diabetes Mellitus in Safi and Essaouira Provinces (Central-Western Morocco)

The Moroccan population heavily rely on herbal remedies to control diabetes mellitus. of the central-western region Morocco uses a  number anti-diabetic medicinal plants, but there is a lack good  ethnobotanical information these plants. Thus, present survey was  conducted in Safi and Essaouira provinces inventory main medicinal  plants used folk medicine treat Seventy-seven traditional  health practitioners were interviewed face-to-face throughout  different sites study area. data analyzed using relative  frequency citation (RFC), Jaccard index (JI), distance, Sorensen's  similarity (QS). In total, 84 species belonging 41 families were  reported. Lamiaceae, Fabaceae, Apiaceae, Asteraceae reported as the  most represented families. Eight taxa described for first time for  treating frequently cited Trigonella foenum-graecum L., Artemisia herba-alba Asso, Olea europaea  subsp. europaea Allium sativum Origanum compactum Benth. Leaves  fruits plant parts used, decoction infusion  preferred modes preparation. As level other  regions Morocco, province Tarafaya south seems be most  like area (JI=36.94). current represents valuable  contribution that can help preserve knowledge this as  well explore plant, phytochemical, pharmacological potential.&nbsp
